The Explorer Program

During the weekend of January 7th, Pico Mountain and Boston’s Youth Enrichment Services (YES) kicked off the second annual Explorer Program. The program provides an opportunity for inner city teenagers to come to Pico Mountain and learn about the snow sports industry.

In the program’s second year, there are eight participants. Over the course of three weekends, spanning three months, Resort Managers will provide each Explorer with the training and experience required to seek Level 1 PSIA certification. The Managers will also introduce and prepare the Explorers for employment in a variety of snow sport professions.

Matt Porter, events and partnerships manager at Killington Resort and Pico Mountain, headed up the first Industry Workshop. He spoke with the Explorers about what skills are necessary to be an events manager. He also discussed the up and coming Dew Tour and what is involved with planning an event of that size and scope.

Resort Managers Tracy Taylor and Dave Beckwith were able to provide the Explorers with key information as to how they became involved within the industry. They reviewed the Pico Business Model and some of the strategies that the Snow Sports School uses to attract and retain participants.

Katherine Rockwell, manager of the Pico Ski and Snowboard School, says “It’s a diverse group of kids, all of whom are interested in being part of the mountain community. They asked insightful questions and we are really looking forward to the next few weekends working with them.”
