SAFETY AWARENESS FIRST
Safety is always a serious concern at winter resorts. The National Ski Areas Association has launched a safety awareness campaign to promote responsible mountain behavior. Just follow seven simple rules - "YOUR RESPONSIBILITY CODE" - and you'll be doing a big favor to yourself and everyone else on the slopes.
National Safety Awareness Week is January 13- January 19, 2007
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY CODE
- Always stay in control.
- People ahead have the right of way.
- Stop in a safe place for you and others.
- Whenever starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield.
- Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
- Observe signs and warnings, and keep off closed trails.
- Know how to use the lifts safely.
KNOW THE CODE. IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
This is a partial list. Be safety conscious.

Here are some other guidelines to help you have fun on the slopes:
Serious Signage
Blue Square: More Difficult Terrain.
Black Diamond: Most Difficult Terrain.
Double Black Diamond: Caution - Extremely Steep Terrain.
Orange Oval: Freestyle Terrain. This terrain may include half-pipes, terrain parks and terrain features.
Orange Circle with Trail Closed - This terrain is closed to skiers and riders.
Body Basics
-
Apply at least 15 spf broad-spectrum sunscreen, regardless of whether the day is sunny or cloudy.
-
Drink water frequently to avoid the dehydrating effects of high altitude, sun and physical activity.
-
Dress in layers with breathable, water-wicking clothes that can be added or subtracted with changes in weather.
Know Your Limits
-- Don't take that last run when your legs have turned to Jell-O.
-- Ski at your own level. Test your skills to improve, but know when you're crossing over into dangerous territory.
-- Control your speed. Respect others on the mountain, especially in high traffic areas where trails are merging.
Smart Style is a terrain park specific safety program that you should check out before using terrain parks.
The 3 main points of Smart Style include:
LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP:
Scope around the jumps first, not over them. Know your landings are clear and clear yourself out of the landing area.
EASY STYLE IT:
Start small and work yourself up. Inverted aerials are prohibited.
RESPECT GETS RESPECT:
From the lift line through the park.
